  • Duration: Initial architecture and roadmap engagement followed by an 80-hour Fabric implementation

LUMEN IT and AGER BI partnered to help ERGT modernise its established business intelligence environment by implementing a scalable Microsoft Fabric analytics platform.

ERGT is a client of LUMEN IT, an AGER BI technology partner. The engagement combined LUMEN IT’s broader technology relationship with AGER BI’s specialist Microsoft Fabric, data architecture and Power BI expertise.

The project established a reusable Fabric architecture spanning API ingestion, Bronze, Silver and Gold data layers, dimensional modelling, semantic models and controlled deployment across development, test and production environments.

Overview

ERGT is an established client of technology partner LUMEN IT. To modernise its existing business intelligence environment, built on SQL Server data warehouses, SSAS and Power BI, ERGT partnered with LUMEN IT and AGER BI to implement a scalable Microsoft Fabric platform.

Combining LUMEN IT’s broader technology relationship with AGER BI’s specialist Microsoft Fabric and data architecture expertise, the project delivered an initial production-ready workload using the Adapt By Design platform while establishing a reusable framework for future analytics migrations.

The Challenge

As part of its Microsoft cloud strategy, ERGT needed to progressively reduce reliance on legacy on-premises infrastructure while preserving its established dimensional modelling methodology and existing investment in Power BI.

Key objectives included:

  • Establishing a governed, multi-environment Microsoft Fabric foundation across DEV, TEST and PROD.

  • Building an automated API ingestion pattern for cloud data sources.

  • Introducing reusable data engineering and deployment standards.

  • Preserving ERGT’s established dimensional modelling approach.

  • Controlling cloud consumption through automated Fabric capacity management.

  • Strengthening ERGT’s internal capability to progressively expand the platform.

Solution Delivered

LUMEN IT and AGER BI designed and implemented a production-ready Microsoft Fabric architecture built around the Medallion pattern across Bronze, Silver and Gold layers.

Adapt API Integration

Reusable Fabric notebooks were developed to ingest data from the Adapt By Design API into the Bronze layer, with nested and child API data structures transformed into structured Silver-layer datasets.

This established a repeatable API ingestion pattern that can be extended as ERGT introduces additional data sources to Microsoft Fabric.

Medallion Architecture and Dimensional Modelling

Gold-layer data was modelled using established FACT and DIM structures, preserving ERGT’s existing dimensional modelling methodology while modernising the underlying data platform.

The Bronze, Silver and Gold architecture separates raw ingestion, transformation and analytics-ready data, providing greater structure, traceability and scalability as the platform evolves.

Governed Semantic Layer

Relationships, calculations and business logic were centralised within Power BI semantic models to provide a consistent and governed foundation for enterprise reporting.

This approach preserves ERGT’s existing investment in semantic modelling while providing a pathway for progressively migrating additional analytical workloads into Microsoft Fabric.

Lifecycle and Capacity Automation

The solution was tested through complete processing runs in DEV before being promoted through TEST and into PROD, establishing a structured deployment approach for future workloads.

AGER BI also designed an Azure Automation solution using PowerShell and Azure Managed Identity to automatically pause and resume Fabric capacity around ERGT’s operating requirements. This provides a practical mechanism for reducing unnecessary Fabric capacity consumption while maintaining operational availability.

Mentoring and Enablement

Solutions were developed collaboratively with ERGT’s internal team, providing practical knowledge transfer across Fabric architecture, notebooks, dimensional modelling, semantic models, deployment practices and platform operations.

This collaborative approach strengthened ERGT’s internal capability to maintain and progressively expand the Fabric environment.

Business Outcomes

Rather than delivering an isolated analytics workload, the engagement provided ERGT with an enterprise-ready foundation for its continued Microsoft Fabric adoption:

  • Production-Ready Architecture: Established a working Medallion Architecture and structured DEV, TEST and PROD deployment approach, providing a foundation for onboarding additional workloads.
  • Cost Efficiency: Automated Fabric capacity management helps reduce unnecessary compute consumption outside required operating windows.
  • Standardised Ingestion: Reusable Fabric notebook patterns provide a consistent approach for ingesting complex REST API and nested data.
  • Preserved Business Logic: ERGT’s established dimensional modelling methodology was carried forward into the modern Fabric environment.
  • Governed Analytics: Centralised semantic modelling provides a consistent foundation for Power BI reporting and business calculations.
  • Scalable Framework: The architecture provides a reusable pattern for progressively migrating additional data sources and analytics workloads.
  • Internal Capability: Collaborative delivery and knowledge transfer strengthened ERGT’s internal capability to maintain and progressively expand the Fabric platform.

The Outcome

The engagement delivered more than a single analytics workload. It established a reusable architecture and engineering framework that provides ERGT with a scalable foundation for its continued Microsoft Fabric adoption, enabling additional data sources and analytics workloads to be progressively migrated using consistent architecture, governance and deployment standards.

Client Testimonial

Alex Williams (ITS Leader, ERGT):

“AGER BI were approachable and easy to partner with in building the required solution.  AGER BI provided advice and guidance on architecting and configuring our BI environment towards best practices, with scalability and manageability a priority.  They also helped our resident data engineer modernise their knowledge, enabling them to develop and manage the environment into the future with good confidence and competence.  Lee Ager’s communication was excellent, and was able to make himself available when needed to assist when our engineer got stuck or needed advice to move forward.  I wish all contractor engagements were this easy! “

Why AGER BI?

ERGT is a client of LUMEN IT, an AGER BI technology partner. LUMEN IT and AGER BI worked together to provide ERGT with complementary technology and specialist data capabilities.

AGER BI brought specialist Microsoft Fabric, Power BI and data architecture expertise to the engagement, working collaboratively with LUMEN IT and ERGT to establish the architecture, implement the initial Fabric workload and transfer knowledge to ERGT’s internal team.

The result is a scalable Microsoft Fabric foundation that ERGT can progressively expand, while demonstrating how LUMEN IT and AGER BI can combine their capabilities to deliver enterprise Microsoft data and analytics solutions.
