Challenge

Tronox (a client of Tern Solutions) struggled to report metrics and key performance indicators to the executive team and site managers and therefore required the assistance of a Power BI specialist to build a suite of reports for Finance, Monthly Executive Team meetings, System Health Indicators, and support the Tronox Operations Information Systems (TOIS) team. The existing Power BI reports were slow, complex, and needed to be rebuilt. Automating data refreshes with data quality checks was critical to ensure data was as up-to-date and accurate as possible.

Key areas of focus:

  • Create a central cloud-based Azure SQL data-warehouse to store data from multiple sources.
  • Develop Azure Data Factory (ADF) pipelines to extract, transform and load (ETL) source data to the Azure SQL data-warehouse destination.
  • Build Power BI reports based off Planview (Portfolio Management and Work Management Software) data.
  • Develop a solution to ‘snapshot’ all Planview data, to identify trends month-to-month.
  • Assist the TOIS team with Power BI and ADF development and maintenance.

Solution

Tern Solutions hired AGER BI as the Power BI experts to consult with Tronox and provide advice on implementing the end-to-end Microsoft solution that would equip the Executive Team and site managers with the necessary reports to monitor metrics and KPIs, assisting with cost-effective and efficient business management.

AGER BI advised creating an Azure SQL database to centralise data from multiple sources, modelled using a star schema methodology to support efficient querying within Power BI. Business rules for reporting were encoded into SQL views to reduce processing load within Power BI, improving performance. SQL Server stored procedures supported data snapshots, while ADF pipelines were used for scheduling daily refreshes and managing ETL operations.

To further modernise and scale the analytics infrastructure, AGER BI also led the migration of ADF pipelines and Azure SQL workloads to Microsoft Fabric. This migration involved:

  • Rebuilding key ADF pipelines in Fabric Dataflows Gen2 for seamless integration into the Fabric workspace

  • Migrating Azure SQL datasets into Fabric Lakehouses & Warehouses to support scalable, high-performance querying

  • Implementing security roles and workspace governance within Fabric for enterprise-grade controls

  • Testing and optimising Fabric pipeline performance to match or exceed existing ADF capabilities

  • Enabling Fabric-native Power BI integration to simplify the semantic layer and reduce maintenance overhead

This transformation allowed Tronox to streamline its modern data platform, benefit from Fabric’s unified architecture, and reduce dependency on fragmented tooling.

A semantic model comprising all relevant datasets was developed to serve as the foundation for Power BI reports—ensuring a single source of truth and eliminating discrepancies in KPI calculations across teams.

Benefits

After successfully implementing the cloud-based Azure SQL database, migrating pipelines to Microsoft Fabric, and delivering a robust Power BI reporting solution, Tronox now benefits from a suite of high-performance, world-class Power BI reports, including:
